We have spent much of these last few weeks horrified by images on television and coming across the internet from Haiti  Seeing the devastation and the people in need has inspired me to want to jump in and do something to help.  I am partnering with my church in an effort to provide a response to the immediate needs, as well as the long term needs of the Haitian people. Let me explain why I feel so strongly for the people in Haiti. 

              In November of 2007, the church I attend, Palm Valley Church, learned about a small hillside community located 3 miles from Port-au-Prince, called Vallue, Haiti (correctly pronounced Value).  We also got to know the local Pastor, Emmanuel, and were excited by how he and his local church were reaching their community and making an impact for Christ, even without a building to meet in.  We were challenged by what we saw and experienced those few days, and left Haiti changed forever.  We wanted to be a part of what God is doing in Vallue, and the rest of Haiti.  So after much prayer and discussion with the church staff, we decided to help support Vallue Baptist Church.  Part of that support was to give financially so they could build their facility and have an even greater impact in their community for Christ. In March of 2008, we got to share in all the wonderful things God was doing, and to see and hear firsthand how God was using Pastor Emmanuel and Vallue Baptist Church.  It was very exciting!  Within the first few months of having a building, the church had grown to 300 people, with more than 20 people giving their lives to Jesus Christ!  Awesome!  And in late 2008, when 7 different hurricanes hit Haiti. The facility we helped build was also used as a place of refuge for many families, not only in the church but the rest of the community, as well. 

            Unfortunately, after the recent earthquake and subsequent aftershock, the church that had been a lighthouse to the community of Vallue, Haiti was destroyed.  Fortunately, Pastor Emmanuel was not injured but 70 pastors from the Haitian Baptist Association were tragically killed.  My church is sending a medical team in February and another team of 12-15 people in April who will be working with the local congregation, as well as an orphanage of 80 children that we have also partnered with in the last year.  It has been laid on my heart to go with our team this April. 

             As you might have well imaged, the trip is not free, since it is my mission not yours I am prepared to find a way to cover my expenses.
