The Importance of a Yearly Furnace Tune-Up

“How often should I have my furnace looked at?” is a common question that homeowners have. On one hand, they want to be sure that their furnace is capable of functioning at full capacity whenever they need it to, and on the other hand, they would rather not pay a technician to come to the house if it’s not absolutely necessary. But the answer to this question is a simple one and should be taken to heart by every homeowner - you should have your furnace serviced at least once a year. In the same way that you wouldn’t drive 100,000 miles in your car without changing the oil, you shouldn’t let your furnace work hard year after year without receiving a tune-up to make sure everything is running as it should.

Many HVAC professionals say that as much as 75% of the calls they receive in the winter are for service requests on non-functioning furnaces, and the common thread that runs through most of those calls is prevention, or rather, a lack there of. Most heating and cooling manufacturers advise that homeowners have their systems serviced at least once a year. Some maintain that heating and cooling systems should be serviced once per season, or once every three to four months. As with a car, the more often it’s looked at, the better chance there is of spotting a problem before the system malfunctions. Also, the more your furnace is serviced, the longer it will run, and since furnaces aren’t exactly cheap, paying for regular service can save you money in the long run since it’s less likely you’ll have to purchase a replacement as soon as if you do not keep up with regular service.

There are myriad reasons why homeowners should regularly maintain their furnace, but none is more important than health. A defective furnace can allow carbon monoxide and other gases to leak out and poison the airflow. It can also allow harmful bacteria to build up inside of the furnace and cause further health risks. Therefore, it’s easy to see the importance of regular furnace maintenance.
