How Long Should An Air Conditioner to Last?

Air conditioners have a lifespan that varies depending upon factors, such as frequency of use and maintenance. In general, you can expect your air conditioner to last 10 to 15 years. Air conditioners that are neglected and are used more frequently can be expected to last about a decade. With mild to moderate use, they can last twice as long. However, it is not unusual for air conditioners to last 20 to 25 years when they have been maintained properly over the years.

If you want to get the most out of your air conditioner, make sure to have a licensed professional perform annual AC maintenance. Tune-ups are usually inexpensive and can ward off the need for a costly air conditioner replacement. When a technician services your air conditioner, they check the condenser to make sure the unit is clean and efficient. If it is clogged with dirt, they can clean the fins and external housing to allow for more efficient operation.

Another great way to prolong the life of your air conditioner is to have the condenser unity strategically located. Air conditioner condensers on the north side of a home have a tendency to outlast condensers on other sides of a home because they’re subject to less sun exposure. Also, consider putting a cover on the condenser in the fall and winter months to alleviate debris build-up.

Lastly, consider keeping the thermostat set at a slightly warmer temperature in the summer months. Remember, your home doesn’t need to feel like the walk-in cooler at the convenient store. It might take some getting used to, but consider keeping your home at 72 degrees in the summertime. On especially warm days, 72 degrees can feel extremely comfortable when compared to hot and humid conditions outside.

When it comes to air conditioners, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If you make it a point to schedule annual tune-ups, keep the condenser clean, and when possible, install your air conditioner condenser in a shady area of your property, you can count on it to last as long as possible.
